East Turkey 15 Days


Day 1 : ANKARA

Arrival in Ankara airport. Transfer to hotel by coach and guide. Overnight. 

Day 2 : ANKARA - HATTUSAS - AMASYA

After breakfast departure to Amasya. On the way visit open air rock pantheon of Yazilikaya with Bogazkale. Visit the ancient Hittite capital of Hattusas. You will see the ancient city wall constructed nearly 3400 years age and the ruins of the Great Temple of the Storm God. The Lion Gate, the King Gate and the Great Fortress. Continiue to Amasya, capital of Pontic Empire. A lovely little town nestled in a small mountain valley formed by the Green River. Dinner and overnight. 

Day 3 : AMASYA - TRABZON

After breakfast travel to Trabzon following Black Sea coastline road with magnificent views of the pine-fortress, plantations of tea and hazelnuts via Ordu, the ancient Giresun, the ancient Cerasus. Trabzon is an ancient Black Sea port with its recorded history dating back to 8th century B.C. Dinner and overnight at Trabzon. 

Day 4 : TRABZON

After breakfast visit Trabzon with Hagia Sophia Museum (13th century Byzantine Church with beautiful frescoes). Fatih Mosque (the ancient church of Panagia Chrysocephalos) Church of St. Anna. In the afternoon excursion to the Sumela Monastery built on an altitude of circa 1200 meter carved into cliff face on the Black Sea Mountains. Return to hotel in Trabzon. Dinner and overnight. 

Day 5 : TRABZON - ERZURUM

Departure for Erzurum crossing the Pontic Alps. This is a beautiful drive following various rivers and passes throughout. Erzurum is one of the largest cities in Eastern Turkey. Despite its size the people maintain quite a conservative Outlook. While n Erzurum we will visit Seljuk Turks monuments the Cifte Minare Medrese and Yakutiye. Dinner and overnight in Erzurum. 

Day 6 : ERZURUM - KARS - DOGUBEYAZIT

An early in the morning drive to Dogubeyazit via Kars. On the way excursion to the medival Armanian city of Ani. Impressive fortified walls stil encircle the ruins of numerous churches, mosques and caravansaries. The proceed to Dogubeyazit passing by the Biblical Mount Ararat. Dinner and overnight in Dogubeyazit. 

Day 7 : DOGUBEYAZIT - VAN

Visit Ishakpasa Palace,a complex formed by the combination a mosque, a fortress and a palace. Drive to Van. Dinner and overnight 

Day 8 : VAN

Excursion to Cavustepe Fortress of Urartian Civilization. Take a ferry for Akdamar Island in the lake of Van. Visit the 10th century Armanian Church called the Church of the Holly Cross. Dinner and overnight. 

Day 9 : VAN - DIYARBAKIR

Departure for Diyarbakir located on the Tigris River and famous for its black stone city walls. Visit the Great Mosque, the old town and its colorful markets. Dinner and overnight. 

Day 10 : DIYARBAKIR - MARDIN - URFA

Departure for Mardin, a very unique city with old - Arabic style houses yet with an important role in the early development Christianity. We will visit the Monastery of Deyr-as-Zeferan just outside of the town, founded in 762 A.D. It was the seat of the Syrian Orthodox Patriarch for almost 800 years. The Monastery is build on top of a 4000 years old temple used by sun worshippers. Continiue to Urfa the birthplace of the propeth Abraham. Dinner and overnight. 

Day 11 : URFA - MT.NEMRUT

After breakfast excursion Harran Village. Then departure to the Mt. Nemrut. We will take mini-buses to drive up the mountain. Enjoy the sunset over the toppled heads of colossal stone statues of Gods, erected 2000 years ago for the giganic sanctuary of King Antiochos I of Commagene. Dinner and overnight at Nemrut. 

Day 12 : MT. NEMRUT - CAPPADOCIA

Departure for Cappadocia. On the way visiy Kayseri. Dinner and overnight at Cappadocia. 

Day 13 : CAPPADOCIA

After breakfast visit the rock carved churches in Goreme Valley, Fairy Chimneys at Zelve Valley, underground city of Ozkonak, Pottery village of Avanos. Dinner and overnight. 

Day 14 : CAPPADOCIA - ANKARA

Departure for Ankara via Salt Lake road. Visit the Roman Baths, Ataturk's Mouseleum and the world famous Museum of Anatolian Civiliations. Overnight in Ankara 

Day 15 : DEPARTURE

After breakfast transfer to airport and end of the tour.
